Designing a Multi-Faith Room: The UK Standards

Providing a dedicated space for prayer is not just a "nice to have"—in many cases, it is the most effective way to avoid indirect discrimination claims. If a Muslim employee cannot pray their obligatory prayers (Salah) within their break times, they may be effectively barred from working for you.

Use the calculator above to get a baseline. Below are the detailed specifications you need to hand to your Facilities Management (FM) team.

1. The "Wudu" (Ablution) Challenge

Before every prayer, a Muslim must wash their face, arms, and feet. This is non-negotiable.

  • The Problem: Employees trying to wash their feet in standard office sinks is a Health & Safety hazard (slipping, water on floor) and creates social friction.
  • The Solution: Install a dedicated Wudu Unit (low-level seated wash basin) or a "Cleaner's Sink" with a low tap and a stool.
  • Ratio: We recommend 1 washing station for every 15-20 staff members.

2. Orientation (Qibla)

Muslims pray facing the Kaaba in Mecca. In the UK, this is roughly South East (119°).

Pro Tip: Mark the direction clearly on the ceiling or wall with a simple "Qibla" arrow. This saves staff from using compass apps on their phones and creates infinite goodwill.

3. Shoe Racks & Storage

Prayers are performed without shoes. A pile of boots at the door is a fire hazard.

  • Provide shelving inside the room (by the door).
  • Allow 30cm of linear shelf space per person.
  • Keep the entrance corridor clear (Fire Officer requirement).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can it be a shared "Quiet Room"?

Yes. It does not need to be exclusively "Muslim". However, it must be clean (no walking in shoes) and quiet. If you make it a general "Wellness Room", ensure yoga classes don't block the strict prayer times (1pm-2pm in Winter is critical).

Do we need separate gender rooms?

Ideally, yes. Men and women generally do not pray in the same line. If you only have space for one room, install a simple curtain divider or a mobile screen. This allows simultaneous use without discomfort.
