Onboarding &
The First Week
Eliminating the "First Friday Fear" and setting the stage for belonging.
25% of new hires leave within the first 90 days. For Muslim staff, early signals of exclusion ("Let's all go to the pub!") can trigger disengagement immediately.
1. The "First Friday Fear"
Every devout Muslim starts a new job worrying: "How do I ask for time off for Friday Prayers?"
The Proactive Manager
Don't make them ask. In the first meeting, say:
"By the way, we have flexible lunch hours for anyone who needs to attend Friday prayers or other appointments."
The relief they feel will be instant. You have signaled safety.
2. The Welcome Pack
Include a one-pager on "Inclusive Facilities":
- Local Halal food spots (map links).
- Location of the Prayer Room / Quiet Room.
- Details of the Muslim Network (if you have one).
3. Alcohol on Day 1
Do not finish the first day with "Drinks provided."
Finish it with "Team Lunch provided" or "Coffee & Cake". If you must
do drinks, ensure 0% options are prominent, not an afterthought.
